Kumaon Mastiff History
Introduction
The Kumaon Mastiff, also known as the Cypro Kukur, is a rare Indian dog breed. These canines were originally bred as guard dogs in the hilly areas of Kumaon in Uttarakhand, India. It is estimated that there are only 150 to 200 Kumaon Mastiff canines are remaining in India today. Many dog enthusiasts believe that ignorance and preference for popular dog breeds such as the Doberman, Pomeranian, and Rottweiler are to blame for the low numbers. The Kumaon Mastiff dogs are extremely powerful, relentless workers, and they must be saved.
Kumaon Mastiff History
The real history of the Kumaon Mastiff is still mysterious. According to experts, this unusual dog breed is thought to have originated in the Himalayan Mountains, where native Indian tribes, known as the "Kumaons", produced these canines and named them ‘Cypro Kukur’. in the local Kumani dialect. Other dog specialists believe that these dogs originated in Cyprus before spreading to the Himalayan regions, and this is the reason why they are known as Cypro Kukur which means Cyprus dog. Furthermore, some of the experts assumed that this breed had descended from the large, solidly-built Molosser dog breeds.
Whereas another group of experts contradicts that there is a higher chance of the Kumaon Mastiff to be a distant cousin of the Indian Mountain dog breeds as they show a striking resemblance to them. However, nobody knows for sure and it will probably remain a mystery. Moreover, some dog breeders, who had a great interest in this dog variety, introduced this breed to Europe in the late 19th century. Particularly, these dogs were introduced in Finland and Italy where there are still a good number of these dogs that may be found.
Description and personality
The appearance of the breed is similar to the old Great Danes. They have fairly lean, well-boned, muscular bodies. The head of these dogs is large, powerful, and they have strong necks. They also have a soft, short coat that comes in white and brindle ranging from dark to light shades.
These dogs are known to be aggressive and fierce breeds therefore proper training and socialization are required for them at an early age. Once the breed gets used to command or instructions, it can be very good-natured and gentle. These dogs are loyal companions and have great guarding abilities. Unfortunately, they are recognized neither by the American Kennel Club nor the FCI.
