Villano de Las Encartaciones History

The Villano de las Encastaciones is a Spanish working dog from the region of Las Encastaciones in the province of Biscay, in the Basque country. The Villano des las Encartaciones was bred for a purpose and has a long history. Sadly, their fierceness and hunting abilities have Little place in the modern world, which is reflected in a dramatic decline in numbers. The breed is very rare, even rarer than the Giant Panda. Indeed, in 2018, there were around 1800 pandas in existence, but less than 100 Villanos. These once desirable traits include the ability to herd semi-wild cattle and control them by biting down hard on their necks until the beast's yield.

Moreover, there is much debate about the origins of the breed, because on one side some people argue that they go way back to the 12th century, but on the other side, some believe that they developed in the 19th century. However, the only thing experts say for sure is that the Villano de las Encartaciones is truly local to the region of the same name. Furthermore, the breed was a working dog, as mentioned above, specifically a herding dog. Their job was to herd sheep, protect the homestead, and control cattle. However, these weren’t pliable domestic cattle but semi-wild roaming the mountains that didn’t have contact with a man from one year to the next. For sure, handling wild cattle is not easy, which is where the courage and brute strength of the Villano made them invaluable to the farmers. They were medium-sized dogs and have something of the look of a sporty mastiff about them. They are stuffy, heavy-set dogs with a deep, powerful chest and strong neck. The breed also has a long, sickle-shaped tail. In their native regions, their ears are often cropped to give them an even more intimidating appearance. They also have a good-sized muzzle, well equipped with teeth for clamping down on those errant wild cattle. Although, unlike other mastiff-type dogs, they have slightly longer and more slender legs, which gives them the advantage of speed and agility, in addition to strength. Moreover, the name “Villano” in Spanish translates to “villain” in English, so it is clear they needed a bit of villainous tenacity to do their job.

The genetic heritage of the breed includes input from a variety of Spanish breeds, including the Cimarron Uruguayo, the imposing Presa Canario, and the Azores Cattle Dog. However, just like many other breeds, the Villano nearly became extinct around the time of the Second World War. Many people fought and made efforts in the 1960s to bring their numbers back from the brink. To do this they crossed the breed with the Spanish Alano, resulting in dogs very close to the original breed which is apparently lighter and faster than their ancestors.
