Thai Bangkaew Dog History

The Thai Bangkaew Dog is a Spitz type of dog that can trace its origins back to the village of Bangkaew located in the Bang Rakam District in the central region of Thailand. The breed is thought to have been developed roughly a hundred years ago.

According to a local legend, a respected monk named Luang Puh Maak Metharee in the Wat Bangkaew monastery was known for his mercy and care for all living things including animals. He was given a pregnant female by a local named Tah Nim from the village nearby. Because of the seasonal flooding in the area, it was believed that there were no male dogs with access to the region, and the locals presumed that the litter of four puppies was a result of a mating with other species like the Asiatic Wild Dog or a Golden Jackal. Fascinatingly, extensive DNA and chromosome studies of the breed were conducted and found that the Thai Bangkaew Dog is a mixture of the domestic dog and the now extinct Golden Jackal. It is believed that these initial four puppies later mated with herding dogs kept by the Song inhabitant tribe, who lived in the village of Huay Chan.

Initially, the Thai Bangkaew Dog’s purpose was to protect and guard property and its owners. Moreover, the breed was well-known after its signature bark used when the owners needed to be forewarned about something unusual. The selective breeding process was initiated in 1957, which started the development of what is known as the modern Thai Bangkaew Dog today. Later, in the 1970s, the Thai Bangkaew Dog’s numbers started to decrease drastically to the point, where the breed was on the brink of extinction. Fortunately, a veterinarian named Dr. Nisit Tangtrakarnpong got interested in the breed and made serious and well-planned breeding efforts in order to preserve and revitalize the breed.

Due to the lack of documentation about the breed, none of the major kennel clubs recognized the Thai Bangkaew Dog yet. However, provisionally, the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) has registered them within their ‘Spitz and other breeds’ category. On top of that, the breed is also very rare outside of its native lands. Nevertheless, the Thai Bangkaew Dog is known for its dominant nature and its loyalty towards its owners. Thus, they are often kept simply as family companions, but they are also used as intelligent and successful guards and watchdogs.
