Slovensky Cuvac History
The Slovensky Cuvac can trace back its origins to the mountains of Slovakia, yet the breed is believed to be derived from the Arctic wolves, whose remains have been preserved in the mountainous regions of Central-Europe to the edge of the glaciers, from the pre-ice age. They include the Balkans, the northern slopes of the Caucasus, the Tatra, the Carpathians, the Pyrenees, the Alps, and finally the northern slopes of the Abruzzi.
The Slovensky Cuvac has been a loyal and trusted companion of the Slovakian sheep farmers for as long as the 17th century. Slovak alpine farming has an ancient tradition. The breed, alongside the mountain sheep, the Huzul horse, and other typical mountain habitats, have formed the basic economic foundation of the region, which took advantage of the different animals in their own way. Initially, the dogs were mostly used to shepherd livestock and to protect and guard the cattle against any predators, especially from bears and wolves. The usage of the Slovensky Cuvac did not end there, this multi-purpose, robust breed also pulled carts and served as a devoted and loyal companion to their owners and family. Because of the breed’s large physique, in those rural areas, the dogs had to carry out several functions and tasks in order to earn their daily meal.
These mountain people were mostly considered as free people, not influenced by any medieval forced labor. They protected their frontiers and they paid their dues in form of sheep’s cheese. Holidaymakers who paid a visit to the mountain farmers for the reason to buy some cheese and other products quickly found pleasure in the cute-faced, large, thickly, white-coated Slovensky Cuvac puppies. A couple of them also decided to bring the breed to the lower lands, where they were not regarded as a luxury breed, because of their less elegant, unusual appearance.
Throughout the centuries, from its first appearance, the Slovensky Cuvac has been known in multiple names including the Slovakian Chuvach, the Tatra Chuvach, and the Slovak Cuvac. Most experts presume that the breed’s name is derived from the Slovakian word “cuvat” which translates into “to hear”, pointing out that the breed has exceptional senses, which enables the dogs to notice any predators on the prowl. The Stud Book of the Slovensky Cuvac was founded in the early 1900s, in Czechoslovakia, by Professor Anton Hruza of the Brno Veterinary College. Since then, there is a club for the breed’s fanciers based in Bratislava, which keeps exact records and holds exhibitions, competitions, assessments, and shows in all regions of the Republic even nowadays. The UKC (United Kennel Club), as well as the AKC (American Kennel Club), did recognize the breed within the guardian dog group. Nowadays, the Slovakians are making efforts in order to be able to keep the breed alive.

Miska (my Cuvac) was the most loyal and faithful pet, ever! Cuvac's can be a bit mouthy (barking) but alerting their owner is what they were bred to do. They make up this little inconvenience with their brains and companionship.
