Montenegrin Mountain Hound History

Introduction

Similar to other scent hounds of the region, the Montenegrin Mountain Hound, originally known as the Black or Yugoslavian Mountain Hound, is a well-tempered breed with excellent tracking abilities.

They are not known for their excellent noses, but for their hardy nature, impressive endurance, endless resolve, and all-around even temperament.

Many of their features, like their gregarious nature with other dogs and their easygoing demeanor around most people, stem from their long-standing responsibilities. They create close bonds with their owners and families and have been known to be affectionate with those who teach them.

Origins

Little evidence on the dog's real origin appears to exist, as it does for many breeds with a century or more of history, although there are signs that suggest how they might have been developed first.

They have a lot in common with other regional breeds, such as the Serbian Hound, implying that they may have shared ancestors.

Both are thought to be the product of a mix between the Phoenicians' trim, swift, sleek sighthounds and indigenous Slavic dogs, which were a bit more rough, muscular, and strong of the nose.

Moreover, as their name implies, they were bred for traversing mountainous terrain and are tenacious hunters in the field.

They were used for centuries to hunt small game such as hare and fox and occasionally even deer and wild boar, usually in packs.

Regardless of when they were developed or in what capacity, they signaled a significant shift in the ability of hunters in the region to follow their prey with one or more strong-nosed, endurance dogs at the lead.

Records show that hounds identical to those used now were used as far back as the 1800s, but given their widespread use in the area, this could go even deeper.

The first breed standard was published in 1924, but the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound was not truly recognized until 1969 when it was still known as the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound.

Recognition

The FCI formally changed its name to the Montenegrin Mountain Hound in 1997, and the United Kennel Club eventually recognized them in 2008.

While they were and still are moderately popular hunting animals in the region when compared to other breeds, they are still regarded as rare and are rarely seen outside of their native range.
