Mackenzie River Husky History
The Mackenzie River Husky is not so much a breed of dog, but rather a type. This term describes several populations of sled dogs throughout the arctic. The name at the beginning was often used as a sales tool to sell mutts or unwanted litters as well.
From the researches of Bill Carpenter of Yellowknife, which dates back to the 1530s we can get to know a lot about the breed. His name can be also connected with the Canadian Eskimo Dog(also known as the Greenland Husky), which he received a grant in the 1970s to bring back.
In his research on the Mackenzie River Huskies, he discusses mainly the emergence of the freight huskies below and around the arctic circle during the mid to late 1800s. He does not disclose the era of the Gold Rush and its influence, the separation of the AKC Siberians and Alaskan Malamutes in the 1930s, and the high arctic aboriginal husky in the research. In the 19th century, each village or community lived separated from each other by hundreds to thousands of km, developing similar characteristics based on their similar need. So these huskies were separately and distinctly developed as small working teams just as the people living in the territory. While consuming from limited and sometimes erratic food sources they were capable of hauling large loads through deep snow, and hilly or mountainous territories. Their long legs and the rangy built body completed with long back and deep chests allow them to run in a single track. Their weight is usually about 45 kgs. Social bonding, pack mentality, build and gait reflect the wolf influence which naturally occurs when you have sled dogs in remote environments viewing their people as extensions of the pack. They are willing workers once they realize that they get to run with their ‘pack’ and view you as the alpha dog.
In the 1960s due to several factors, the breed started to demise due to several reasons. One of them is the Canadian government efforts to stop native sovereignty by the mass killing of dog teams and profitable sled dog racing that resulted in the development of a breed of small, high strung running machines. So nowadays breeders are having a hard time saving the subsistence of these gorgeous animals.
The catchy expression "Mackenzie River Husky" was coined from newcomers because in contrast with the locals, who l knew the huskies by their different villages, naming them accordingly eg.: Old Crow dogs. McPherson dogs, Red Mackenzie River Husky Arctic Red dogs, Porcupine River dogs, Hay River dogs, etc the newcomers were not able to differentiate them while passing through an area.
