The original Goldendoodle is a hybrid cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. The exact date of conception is unknown but it is thought they were first bred in the 1960s. This breed originated in Australia and North America during the 1990s and was bred in hopes of creating a guide dog that was suitable for people with allergies. Combining the gentleness and trainability of a golden retriever with the low-shedding, hypoallergenic coat of the standard poodle was the perfect combination. The idea was also inspired by the breeding of the Labradoodle, a Poodle and a Labrador Retriever hybrid, which fall out in the late 1990s. Others believe that the Goldendoodle was developed in order to correct the issues that were found in the Australian Labradoodle.
As the breed became more and more popular, it was a smashing success, requests for different sizes and colors became common. Today there are four categories for sizes including petite, mini, medium, and standards and they also come in a variety of colors and coat patterns. However to be able to fully understand this breed we need to look at the history of both parents.
As we already know, the Poodle is famous for its low-shedding coat and this is one of the reasons why this breed is so often crossed. Its origins can be traced back to ancient times and it is thought that they were first bred in Germany. Some people also believe that the word ‘Poodle’ comes from the German word “puddle” meaning to splash in the water. In the meantime, the Poodle became quite famous, especially in France, like a duck hunting dog. However, throughout history, this breed has been used for many other jobs besides hunting, for example in circus, court, and companion dog for the rich and also for rescue.
On the other hand, the Golden Retriever was developed in Scotland, at the highland estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks, also known as Lord Tweedmouth, during the mid-19th century. According to researchers Sir Dudly had a yellow coated retriever, Nous, who then he bred to a Tweed Water Spaniel by the name of Belle, and four beautiful golden puppies were born. He wanted a dog who was excellent for hunting but with a gentle and sweet temperament. However when the Golden Retrievers were first registered at a kennel club, they were being called ‘Golden Flat-Coats, and their name was only changed in 1911. They quickly gained popularity in the USA as well.
Both parents score in the top 5 of the smartest breed, so they passed on excellent genes to their offspring. The Goldendoodle is an extremely social, outgoing, and non-aggressive dogs. They are the perfect candidates for service work as well as family pets.
