English Springer Spaniel History
Spaniel types of breeds have a very long and extensive history. It is thought that the breeds are originated from Spain, many centuries ago, and the Spaniels have presumably taken parts of the world by the Romans or via their trading ships. The name Spaniel is also derived from their place of origin, Hispania, or Spain as we know it today. Spaniel-like dogs were mentioned in Welsh law as early as 300 A.D.
The English Springer Spaniel’s history can be traced back to the 14th century, in England. The breed was developed long before guns were invented, the spaniels were used during hunting for the purpose of flushing game birds or small animals by springing at them and driving them into the open so they could be captured by hunting hawks, coursing hounds, or nets flung over them. The first written document presenting the English Springer Spaniel was published in the 14th century, by a French lord and hunter, describing the work of hunting dogs in his “Book of the Chase”. Official distinction between the land and the water spaniels was found in historical records dating from the 16th century. A century after that, the land Spaniel was divided into two categories, the Springing Spaniel, and the Crouching Spaniel. The Springing type was later divided further according to the dogs’ sizes, from this the Cocker Spaniel and the English Spaniel have arisen. Smaller dogs in the litter were used for hunting woodcock, thus they were called Cockers, on the other hand, the larger pups in the same litter would be used to flush game and were called Springers. Later, as firearms were invented during the 17th century, Spaniels proved themselves to be especially useful adept at flushing game for shooters.
The first Springer Spaniel ever to be recorded was born in 1812, this specimen was called Mop 1, and it was responsible for a lineage of dogs that became increasingly popular in the Norfolk region of England. The Kennel Club of England recognized the English Springer Spaniel in 1902. Later, in 1913, a Canadian breeder imported one English Springer Spaniel specimen. Ten years later, in 1923, the AKC (American Kennel Club) also recognized the breed, as one of the most popular ones at that time. A year later, the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association was founded. During the early 1940s, field trial enthusiasts started to breed the dogs with qualities that would produce the top results in the field, meanwhile show fanatics started to focus on specimens that were both consistent with the breed's standard while having the "flash" to win in the show ring. Interestingly, these two variants of the English Springer Spaniel are not inter-bred even today. Both the field-bred and the show-bred types have a keen sense of smell, good working abilities, endurance above all, style, and a good overall appearance. Both types have the instinct to work and can be trained to the gun, but only very few English Springer Spaniels work in both field and show events. The last dual champion excelling both at field-work, and conformation was a specimen named Green Valley Punch in 1938.
Besides being excellent gundogs, the English Springer Spaniels are also used today as sniffer dogs by the police, aiding at search-and-rescue cases, and in the detection of bombs, drugs, dead or missing humans, and counterfeit materials. Furthermore, the English Springer Spaniel has proven themselves to be excellent family companions too. Even President George H. W. Bush owned an English Springer Spaniel, named Millie, and she was one of the most famous presidential pets. There was even a book entitled “Millie’s Book: As Dictated to Barbara Bush.
