Drentsche Patrijshond History
Drentsche Patrijshond Origins
The Drentsche Patrijshond, also known as Drent or Drenthe in English, is a versatile spaniel-type hunting dog from the 16th century, founded by the Spioenen, a group of Spaniards who came to the Netherlands via France. In the Netherlands, these dogs were called partridge dogs. The presence of partridge dogs has been visible for decades, as evidenced by Gabriel Metsu’s 17th-century painting ‘The Hunter’s Present’. The partridge dog lies against the hunter’s leg in the artwork, while the man is handing a woman a partridge, a double entendre at the time. Furthermore, in the eastern part of the country, especially in the province Drenthe, these dogs were kept purebred and were not mixed with foreign breeds as done elsewhere. This rural province was unusual as it allowed the privilege to hunt even ordinary gentry. As a result, the major, the farmer, and the rest of the population, in general, required a dog to assist them in their quest for various small wildlife. The Drent was that dog for nearly 300 years. The Drentsche Patrijshond was first recognized by the Dutch Kennel Club in 1943. This was symbolic during the Second World War, as at the time Dutch nationals were keen to separate themselves from the Germans and to celebrate all things ‘Holland’. Their popularity as hunting gun dogs has remained unchanged to this day, and Dutch hunters still favor them. Their gregarious attitude has also led to their widespread use as non-working home pets. However, while they are becoming more popular in Europe, they are still uncommon in the rest of the world.
The breed’s job
The Drentsche Partijshond is not a typical continental pointer. Drents had to do everything as a farm dog; hunt feathers and fur, maintain the farm free of vermin, play duty as a watchdog and child playmate, and so on. They are utilized in a variety of activities, including hunting, agility, tracking, dog sledding, and skijoring. Moreover, the breed is ideal for hunting a wide range of wildlife in a variety of terrain. He is recognized for remaining in touch with the hunter, when on point, while awaiting the hunter, the dog will often look back at his hunting partner if it takes a long time to wait. His adaptability makes him suitable for all manner of games in the field as well as in water. The Drent is also known to be a good retriever.
Drentsche Patrijshond Recognition
In November 2010, the American Kennel Club recognized the Drentsche Patrijshond Club of America, and the breed was added to the AKC Foundation Stock Service Program, allowing owners of registered Drents to participate in AKC sanctioned events such as hunt tests and agility competitions.
