Corgidor History

The Corgidor is considered to be the oldest designer dog breed, for the reason that it is thought to have been developed around the early 20th century, presumably in North America. Some even state that the Corgidor’s history goes even further back into the 19th century. Nevertheless, it is imaginable that crosses, resembling the Corgidor, were in existence as a result of natural mating even earlier. Hybrid dog breeds have become instant successes during the late 20th century when people started to realize that crossing purebred breeds will result in a dog that combines the best and most desirable features, capabilities, and traits of each parent dog. Even though, breeders usually never know what to expect, which traits the puppy will inherit from the parent dogs.

Regarding the Corgidor’s ancestry, we need to delve deeper into its parent breeds’ histories, to gain a better understanding of the reasons why breeders choose to mix the Labrador Retriever with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. On the one hand, the Labrador Retriever can trace its origins back to Newfoundland, in Canada, all the way to the early 18th century. The breed was called Saint John’s Water Dog back then, and the dogs’ main purpose was to help fishermen move the giant and heavy nets, to catch and to control the vermin population both at the bay, and on the ships. Later, the breed was re-named after the Labrador Sea nearby, where the breeding’s last stage is thought to have taken place. According to the experts, the Labrador Retriever was brought to England in the 1820s, where the dogs were further refined to be skilled retrievers and hunting companions. Unfortunately, it was pushed to the brink of extinction towards the end of the 19th century. Nonetheless, during the 1920s, the breed got to the United States of America, where it was an instant success. Nowadays, the breed is believed to be one of the most popular breeds of all time. They are versatile, intelligent, funny, all in all, the perfect breed for most. On the other hand, there are two separate varieties of the Welsh Corgi, the Cardigan, and the Pembroke. Moreover, until the 1930s, these two varieties were not officially considered separate breeds. It is thought that the Cardigan Corgi is one of the oldest European herding breeds, it is believed that the breed has been in Wales for 3,000 years now, herding cattle. The Pembroke Corgi was also developed to be a working breed, on the Welsh farms. The real fame came for the Corgi after the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, showed off her pack of Corgis running around Windsor Castle.

Even though both of the parent breeds are well-recognized by all the major kennel clubs, just like any other hybrid breed, the Corgidor is not registered with any of the kennel clubs and organizations yet, however, they are recognized by the Dog Registry of America. This can be explained with the fact, that the puppies are very unpredictable both in physical appearance and in behavioral traits. Moreover, regarding that the Corgi is a small-sized breed, while the Labrador Retriever is a medium to big-sized breed, consequently, the Corgidor puppies’ sizes can vary a lot. The size spectrum ranges from the rambunctious large Labrador to a short-legged, potentially grumpy Corgi.

Although, most importantly, the Corgidor is considered to be an excellent family companion. Both of its parent breeds are well-behaved around children and are both very sociable creatures, while also being intelligent and friendly.
