Braque du Puy History

The Braque du Puy is also known as the Dupuy Pointer to many. However, the history of the breed is primarily based on legend or scribbled notes from the past.

According to experts, unfortunately, this dog suffered greatly during the Second World War, and as a result of this many people believe that the original dog has become extinct and that the current dogs of this breed are from a new line, not of the original strain.

Moreover, what we do know is that the dog originated in France during the 1800s and was a member of the Pointer breed.

Their genealogy is still a point of contention, with some claiming that they are descended from the Spanish or Portuguese Pointer, while others claim that they are descended from the English Pointer.

Theories about Braque du Puy origin

Furthermore, the most widely accepted theory is that the Braque du Puy was created by breeding a Levier's sighthound with another Braque or Pointer breed, most likely the Braque Francais.

Some claim that two brothers named Dupuy or du Puy bought a male Sloughi dog from a soldier after owning a liver and white Braque Francais female dog named 'Miss'.

Another story of which there is also no evidence is about a gamekeeper in France called Puy who worked as a loyal servant to the King of France. His job was to watch over a kennel of French Setters during the French Revolution.

When the French Setters eventually became extinct in most of France, Puy began breeding the last of the French Setters with other breeds, one being Braques.

The new dog breed name became known as Braque De Puy in his honor. However, it must be highlighted that there is a significant lack of evidence for all scenarios.

The stories of the Braque du Puy history has many chapters, with each 'expert' claiming that their version of how this great dog came into being is right.

Despite these possible theories, the name Braque De Puy could just be a phrase used to describe volcanic hills in France.

Puy was also a candidate name, and there are many places in France named Puy. It's also likely that these canines were bred in one of the several places bearing the same name.

More information on their history

The Braque De Puy was particularly popular in France, especially around the marshy parts of the west coast, due to its regal appearance.

Some residents claim that the breed existed prior to 1808, while others claim that this is when they were originally bred.

Moreover, the Braque du Puy is a very refined-looking dog that was very popular at one time and is said to be ideally suited to work in the marshy region located on France's western coast.

The Braque du Puy was well-known among French sportsmen, but it never achieved the same level of popularity as other Braque family members probably because the breed lacked the keenness of other breeds' noses. They were not popular in other countries, besides their home.

Unfortunately, when both World Wars came around, the breed was knocked out along with many other major French dog breeds. In the 1960s, people wanted to revive the Braque du Puy but it is uncertain whether the breed was the same as it was years prior.

Conclusion

Many people believe the Braque De Puy went extinct after World War II, but others believe the breed survived until the 1970s and ultimately died out.

Few others claim that the breed can still be seen in rural European villages today. While there are still breeders claiming to sell the Braque De Puy dog breed, those dogs are almost certainly re-creations of the defunct breed.
