Bernedoodle History

The Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed, a cross between two great purebreds: the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. The Bernedoodle comes in three different sizes, similar to the Poodle: the toy Bernedoodle (12 to 17 inches tall), the mini Bernedoodle (18 to 22 inches tall), and the standard Bernedoodle (23 to 29 inches tall). While the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle were most likely crossed long ago, the first purposeful breeding of two Bernedoodles is said to have occurred in early 2003 in Canada, when Sherry Rupke produced her first litter of Bernedoodles in Ontario. She continues to work to develop this hybrid today.

However, to be able to understand the history of the Bernedoodle, we have to look at the history of the parent breeds. The Bernese Mountain Dog, also known as Berner, is one of four ancient Swiss Sennenhund Breeds. The Berner is the only one out of this group to have long fur. The breed’s ancestry most likely stems from a cross between the farming dogs of the Swiss Alps and the Molosser, which is a Mastiff-type dog that the Romans brought with them in the first century B.C. This explains the breed’s huge head and soft personality, as well as their incredible work ethic and power. Although the Bernese Mountain Dog was once used as a farm dog to accompany flocks, pull carts, and guard the home, they are typically just used as companion dogs today. They are wonderful with children and are very easy to train, but their urge to be with the family at all times can cause problems if separation is too frequent. While these dogs have been around since ancient times, it was only in 1902 that they truly became recognized. The Swiss Dog Club sponsored a show to promote Swiss dogs, and two years later, in 1904, at an international show in Bern, the Bernese Mountain Dogs obtained their name. It was in that same year that this working dog was actually recognized as a breed. Moreover, in 1936, two British breeders discovered the beautiful Berners and began to breed them in England. By the time 1937 rolled around, the American Kennel Club had accepted the friendly and good-natured canine into the official Working Class category.

On the other hand, as we already know, the Poodle is popular for its low-shedding coat and this is one of the reasons why their breed is so often crossed. The Poodle’s origins can be traced back to prehistoric times and it is believed that they were first bred in Germany. However, we tend to say that the Poodle originated in France due to its long and complicated history. With its woolly and curly coat, which provided protection against the chilly water, this breed became popular in France as a duck hunting dog. Although, throughout history, the Poodle has been used for many other jobs besides hunting, for example in circuses, for rescuing, and also for the rich as a companion dog. Later, the breed developed its more distinct look when noble ladies wanted to carry around little dogs as pets and this brought about the breeding of Toy and Miniature Poodles.

Being a relatively new breed and a hybrid of two purebreds, the Bernedoodle is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, though it is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, and the International Designer Canine Registry.
