Xiasi Dog History

The Xiasi Dog is a breed originating from Guizhou province in China. Since the breed is mainly raised in the town of Xiasi, Kaili city, the official name for the breed is Xiasi Quan, but members of the Miao ethnic group also refer to this breed as Bai Long Quan.

The Xiasi Quan and people from the Guizhou community have been living together for a long period of time now. In Guizhou, the breed is respected by everyone because there is a myth that the dog brings wealth to the families. According to experts, the dog was already present at the beginning of the 11th century, when people trained the breed to hunt smaller animals so they could trade them. Besides hunting, the breed was also bred to protect the household. The Xiasi Quan have distinctive characteristics and traits that make them ideal hunting dogs. Their lean muscular bodies, padded paws, and powerful legs are bred to follow fast and agile prey. In the southern part of Guizhou, the Xiasi dogs are often trained as guard dogs. The breed possesses a keen sense of smell, as well as an impressive speed and endurance. Moreover, they are very loyal and affectionate to their owners. The adult weighs from 11 to 25 kgs, with a height of 17 to 20 inches. He has short, tight, white skin, a large face with pointed ears, small eyes, and a wide mouth. They also have skin redness around the nose, mouth, and ears.

Furthermore, in the more modern days, in the Chinese province of Guizhou, the Xiasi dogs are bred to fight wild boars in the competition. For some, the sport is training for their hunting dogs, others take part purely for entertainment. The game started around the 1960s when local farmers wanted to protect their farms from the wild boar. The competition takes place every weekend in different villages and is judges by the agility of the dog and the duration of the dog’s biting. Both animals are forced to fight until one of them is injured. Numerous international animal protection organizations have been mobilizing against this “tradition” for some years now and have called for an end to the fighting.

Overall, the Xiasi Dog has an adaptive nature and is easy to raise and train. In 2013 he took 3rd place in the competition at the world-famous breeds of dogs. The breed is also recognized by the Chinese Kennel Club and is accepted in most dog shows. However, the Xiasi Dog is on the verge of extinction.
