Pomchi History

The Chihuahua and the Pomeranian dog mix is known as the Pom-Chi has been around for decades now. However, it was only in the last 25 or 30 years that breeders started to intentionally cross and mix these two separate breeds. It is safe to presume that the breed was first developed in the United States at some point around that period because the Pom-Chi Club of America was established in the late 1990s. Even though Pom-Chi is the official name of this breed, these dogs can be found with names like Chi-Pom, Chimeranian, Pomachis, or the mouthful Pomahuahua.

Regarding the history of the two breeds; the Pomeranian is descended from the German Spitz dogs originally found in Pomerania, a region of northern Germany and Poland, these dogs’ ancient ancestors were originally largely working sled-pulling dogs working in the Arctic Circle. Their unique looks made them popular among European aristocracy from the 16th century. Pomeranians made good companion dogs for many nobles. In 1891, the first official breeding club for Pomeranians was established in England back. Two decades later, three Poms actually ended up being the only surviving animals from the Titanic disaster on the Atlantic Ocean. Pomeranians continued their increase their fame, slowly spreading across the world. They quickly established themselves as Americans’ favorites. Chihuahuas come from Mexico from the state of Chihuahua. Experts disagree slightly on just how far back the breed goes, but it is widely presumed that Chihuahuas are descended from a breed of dog which is now extinct, called Techichis. The Techichi breed is no longer found but was a companion dog to tribesmen in the ancient Toltec civilization in Mexico. Technics, and later Chihuahuas, were considered to be favored as family companions. Another theory goes that Chihuahuas were introduced to Central America by Spanish traders from, of all places, China.

Being a result of crossbreeding between the Chihuahua and the Pomeranian, the Pom-Chi is a hybrid breed. A great deal of these dogs is a so-called first-generation mix (aka a 50-50 mix of the two purebreds). Their appearance and behavior can be hard to predict. F1 Pom-Chi puppies can resemble one of the parents or be an almost equal mix of both parents. The first generation is a true cross while successive breeding of the original puppies will eventually result in a more standardized look, temperament, and behavior. Pom-Chi fanciers have plans to continue to create this hybrid breed until it has successfully continued for 7 generations. Once that has been done, the Pom-Chi might have the opportunity to be considered as a purebred dog. This will hopefully also result in the capability to be registered with the more prestigious canine registries, like UKC or AKC.
