Old Time Farm Shepherd History

These dogs were a versatile breed, bred to herd and guard livestock and their owners, hunt, and control the predators in an occasional attack. The breed exhibits excellent intelligence and combines various instincts. The passionate and love to please their owners, yet they are independent thinkers and think using choice and consequences to a degree that is often unbelievable to many canine training experts that are unacquainted with this breed.

Around the 1750s the Battle of Culloden and the subsequent immigration of numerous Scotsmen to North Carolina, has introduced a viable population of this breed around that area. The predominant ancestor of the American Old Time Farm Shepherd was the “old Scotch Collie”. This breed is originated from the north of Scotland by Bewick in 1790. The last pure line of this breed in the United States was quite possibly Dunrovin's Old Shep. As the focus of American life has moved from the homestead to the urban area, the need for this type of all-purpose dog is disappearing. Another influential breed on the Old Time Farm Shepherd was the Shetland Sheepdog, a small type of shepherd, which is known to exist between the 1950s and 1960s in Oklahoma Panhandle and central Arkansas. In America, with regard to the collie breeds, this means the old working collies brought here from Britain from which the American collie breeds described are descended.

The OTFSC (Old Time Farm Shepherd Club of America) assumes that the dogs’ direct descendants of the old working collies, that developed on their own, and the Old Time Farm Shepherds have remained true to the traits of their ancestors. The OTFSC has described a breed standard of some sort, but it is exceedingly broad. Its editors advocate the term “old Scotch Collie-type of the dog” by which they mean the early Rough Collies, who looked and worked very much like the old working collies and like English Shepherd does nowadays.

Today the descendants of these dogs are more likely to be trained for search and rescue, than for herding or agility. There is a movement currently underway to use this breed as guide dogs, with a hope to use this superior thinking ability in a wonderful way.
