Mucuchies History

Introduction

The Mucuchies dog breed is an exceedingly unusual dog breed that evolved in Venezuela's mountains prior to the 1800s when dogs that had traveled with Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s and 1600s began breeding with each other and with other dogs found locally.

While they were popular locally until the early 20th century, they were practically extinct by the 1960s. In the Venezuelan mountains, concentrated breeding operations are ongoing with the goal of re-establishing the breed, though the success or failure of those projects has yet to be determined.

Origins

In 1498, when the Spanish conquistadors arrived in what is now Venezuela, they were followed by their dogs, which included a mix of Spanish, Algerian, and Pyrenean Mastiffs, as well as Pyrenees, Atlas Ovejero, and possibly other types.

Once the conquistadors had conquered the indigenous people and settled in their dogs began interbreeding, with each other and, some speculate, with an unknown dog breed originally native to that area of South America. This crossbreeding is thought to represent the origins of the Mucuchies dog, with additional mastiff infusions possible in the following generations.

Moreover, it is interesting to highlight that during their liberation effort in the 1800s, Simon Bolivar and his troops came to a halt at a Hacienda in Mucuchies, but were stopped at the gate by a puppy who barked violently, valiantly guarding its master's property.

When Bolivar voiced his admiration, the puppy's owner called the young dog off and handed the dog to him as a present.

Bolivar gave the puppy the name Nevado, which means "snowy," and they became frequent companions, along with a guy named Tinjaca, who was chosen to look after the dog while they were on the road.

Nevado was credited with saving Bolivar's life multiple times during his battle for freedom, but he was speared with a lance during the Battle of Carabobo in 1821, losing his life but assisting the Venezuelan people in gaining independence.

The Mucuchies were shepherds and working dogs, watching and protecting livestock from predators.

Over the years these dogs were bred to develop powerful and very versatile working dogs and by 1926, the Mucuchies could be found all throughout Venezuela and beyond.

For a long time, the Mucuchies breed was popular in the area, but by the mid-19th century, poor breeding techniques had brought the Mucuchies breed to the brink of extinction.

In the 1960s, Santiago and Carlos Cruz sought to resurrect the Mucuchies by importing Great Pyrenees dogs, but their efforts were fruitless, and the Mucuchies were eventually disbanded. In an attempt to save the species, the Navado Foundation, a group with ties to 63rd Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, has since been formed.
