Istrian Coarse-haired Hound History

Introduction

The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound and its ancestor, the Istrian Short-Haired Hound, both originated in Istria, a Croatian peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. These canines were bred specifically for hunting games, such as hare and rabbits, on a range of terrains and in a variety of weather conditions. The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound has a medium-length rough coat that is white and lemon-orange. They are medium-sized, muscular dogs with serious expressions that belie their friendly disposition.

Furthermore, the Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound is a high-energy breed best known for its endurance and tenacity when working. At the same time, this well-rounded hound may form a loving and quiet family pet. Once properly exercised, it behaves nicely indoors. Owners must work hard to ensure that this breed matures into friendly adult dogs due to their innate distrust of strangers.

Appearance

Dogs of this breed can vary considerably in size, as the dog is still bred primarily for hunting, so more emphasis might be placed on performance than on specific appearance requirements. It can range from 12 to 27kg and stand 43 to 60cm at the withers. The breed’s wiry coat is weather-resistant for hunting.

History

The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound is a direct descendent of the Istrian Short-Haired Hound and the French Griffon Vendeen Scent Hound which were crossed in the mid-19th century to produce a longer-haired hunting hound. The Istrian Short-Haired Hound is thought to be one of the oldest Balkan hounds and has certainly been in existence for many centuries, having evolved from a variety of both scent and sighthounds throughout the years. Moreover, the Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound, just like its forefathers, is a determined hunting hound that has been bred to work hard.

Both their physical appearance and personality reflect this since they have a hunter’s temperament and a look that has not been historically important to breeders and can vary somewhat between individuals. The breed hunts a variety of small prey, including rabbits and foxes, using its keen sense of smell. When it comes to hunting, they are known for their bravery and tenacity.

Furthermore, according to popular belief, the Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound was originally documented in a dog exhibition in Vienna in 1886. They did not set the crowd alight and have never been a very popular dog breed. Breed numbers dropped during the two World Wars, as they did for many other dog breeds, and the breed is no longer well-known internationally.

Recognition

Historically, both Slovenia and Croatia have laid claim to this breed, but it is currently recognized by the FCI and the UKC as a Croatian dog. It was recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1948 and the first standard dates back to 1969. The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound is classified as a Scent Hound and gained acceptance into the UKC as recently as 2006. Nowadays, the Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound is considered a rare breed and is not commonly kept as a companion animal.
