Hygenhund History

Hygenhund Origins

The Hygenhund is a scent hound that was created at the turn of the 19th century. The breed is considered a popular Norwegian dog that is used to hunt small game, particularly fox and hare. However, the breed is also extensively used to hunt raccoons and rabbits. The Hygenhund was developed by a devoted scent hound breeder named Mr. Hygen. Once the breed was introduced, it was given the name Hygenhund after its breeder. Mr. Hygen desired a breed with exceptional hunting stamina and the capacity to travel great distances over tough, harsh, and cold terrain.

As a result, hounds from Norway, Germany, and England were crossed with hunting dogs from other countries. According to experts and documentation, the Hygenhund’s ancestors include the Basset Hound, the Bloodhound, the Beagle, the Holsteiner Hound, the Scandinavian Hound, and the English Pointer.

Further development

In Norway, the Hygenhund became quite popular and many people preferred this hunting dog over others. However, in the 20th century, the breed’s popularity began to dwindle. One of the reasons behind this is that the Hygenhund is not well-known outside of its home country so in recent years the breed has seen a decline in popularity. The Hygenhund is a hardworking scent hound and a wonderful family companion, however, another reason for the decline of its popularity is that his tendency to be possessive of his property has given him a negative reputation.

Breeders in Norway are working hard to rehabilitate the breed’s reputation by following stringent breeding protocols. This allows them to work on the inherent temperament of the breed to produce puppies that may not be as naturally possessive as their forefathers. The Hygenhund is recognized by both the Norwegian Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club.

Hygenhund Characteristics

The Hygenhund is famous not only for its haunting qualities but also for being an excellent companion, so the breed is suitable for living in a large family. The Hygenhund is friendly with every one it has known for some time. The breed is fantastic with kids and will usually join in on any game. Furthermore, socialization is insanely vital for the Hygenhund. This is one of the reasons why the breed is often used as a guardian. Although it is small in size, it has an innate instinct to protect. In communication with other dogs, the Hygenhund exhibits different behavior.

On one hand, some individuals may show leadership qualities and on the other hand, some do not show much interest. It is not recommended to leave the dog alone with other animals. The Hygenhund’s excitement and hunting habits can manifest themselves at any time. Moreover, when hunting, the breed always interacts with the owner and other dogs. Usually, the following of the prey is accompanied by loud barking. It is also important to highlight that if you cannot allow your dog to hunt, you need to find an alternative. Go out in the woods, play with various toys, and spend several hours outside.
