Chiribaya Dog  History

The Chiribaya Dog or also known as the Peruvian Shepherd is an extinct breed of dog from southwest Peru.

The breed is believed to have originated centuries ago as diligent herding dogs.

The Chiribaya Dog was a short-legged dog with a long snout, long fur, and a longer body. It had cropped ears, a medium-sized tail, and dark spots on the back and head.

The breed is so ancient that people claim that it might have been a pre-Columbian dog.

Furthermore, it was first identified by a Peruvian anthropologist Sonia Guillén Oneglio, who discovered 42 mummies in 2006.

Furthermore, the Chiribaya Dogs were not only employed to herd llamas, but they were also an important component of the ancient Peruvian culture.

Even after they died, they were treated as human beings.

To be clear, they were buried in a special pet cemetery with blankets and food. This is done in the hopes that these canines would be pleased in the hereafter as well.

How did the Chiribaya Dog become extinct?

There are no definite dates for when the Chiribaya Dogs went extinct. The investigation of the dog mummies, on the other hand, revealed that they were buried sometime between c.900 and 1250 CE.

As a result, by the mid-13th or 14th century, these dogs had become extinct.

The ancient Peruvians adored these dogs and treated them as if they were their own children, thus according to experts the cause of their disappearance may have been due to health problems.
