Beauceron History

The Beauceron is the largest of French sheepdogs. Although it was almost unknown outside of France, it has a long history as it was an old breed developed very slowly in France with no crosses from foreign countries. One of the earliest records and descriptions of this breed is believed to be found in written form in a Renaissance manuscript in 1578. According to some researches, the Beauceron is thought to be descended from an ancient canine designated by paleontologists as the “Chien des Tourbieres” from the French Jura, that was domesticated as a large hunting dog.

Furthermore its name originates from the La Beauce region in Paris, also known as ‘berger de Beauce’ (shepherd of Beauce) and ‘bas rouge’ (red stockings). The first author who differentiated between the long and short-coated varieties was Abbe Rozier at the very beginning of the 19th century, describing them as the ‘Berger de Brie’ and ‘Berger de Beauce’. According to this identification, the breed was separated into two working types in 1893, and in the same year, the first Berger de Beauce was enrolled by the Société Centrale Canine. In France, the Beauceron had to be confirmed and be able to pass a character test with acceptable ratings. This breed’s job was to serve farms, defend the family (they were especially loving with children) and guard sheep and cattle. Later, during the two world wars, they were also used as messengers by the French army as they had an excellent instinct following commands without any hesitation. Another interesting factor is that they were also used in mine tracking and continued to be used as police dogs in search as well as in rescue. They were powerful dogs and had an excellent physique, being able to work for long hours.

Moreover in the 1960s the French Ministry of Agriculture actually asked the Society Central Canine to make a confirmation examination to ensure and preserve the qualities of the ancient sheepdog so it would be protected. They were worried that this breed would die out as it actually faced extinction twice already due to both world wars because they were not only used as messengers but also as bomb dogs. Not so much later in the 1990s, the Beauceron was recognized by the United Kennel Club and also got accepted into the AKC Foundation Stock Service for registration.
